Lake Martin Fishing Report

by Deborah Stearns Duck

Updated 11/18/2007

I’m getting lots of different takes on what is working best on Lake Martin now. Even though the water is at the lowest level in over 25 years, there are still tournaments going on and of course, we have the old timers who have fished this lake for over 50 years.  They are going to fish no matter what!  Thank God for them!  Thanks to Kowaliga ramp and the Pace’s Point ramp, we can still get your boats in.

Lots of Spotted Bass in the two to four pound range are being caught with a Largemouth thrown in for good measure every so often.  Reports are that Shad Raps and Spinner Baits are working well.  I also had reports that Texas Rigs, Shakey-heads and Bandits are working well around rocky points.  Red clay points with white rocks are producing lots of fish.  Spottail minnows are always the old reliable when fishing anytime in Lake Martin.  There are a lot of Crappie being caught on small Shiners and Red Tuffies.  I’ve had reports of quite a few Catfish being caught with Night Crawlers.

Top water action is on the rise with the water temperatures getting cooler and the fish moving more and more.  You really have to consider the fishing conditions as you decide which top water lures to use.  If you have a target spied, use a chugger.  You can twitch it and work it carefully in a small area to entice that bite.  If the Bass are scattered across a bigger area I would suggest using a prop bait.  The propellers attract the fish from quite a distance increasing your chance for a great catch.  In the clear, deeper water, use a stickbait and walk it across the water making a lot of noise.  These will draw up the larger bass from the deeper water.  You’ll get your trophy bass using this technique.  If you want to fish a little slower, try a shallow-diving lure, the kind that float when you let them rest.  If you have one of these that have a propeller, it’s even better!

One of my favorite techniques for using a stick bait is called “walking the dog”.  You need to cast out, twitch the lure to one side, pause briefly letting the line go slack, then twitch it again.  If you are using a propeller-based stick bait, it will move back in forth in a left-right pattern.  You need to do this with short jerks.  Once you get the lure going in the right pattern, you can walk the stick bait by using a continuous short, fast jerking motion.  This is great working along a deep rocky drop off to bring those prize winning fish out into the open!  Good Fishing!  ><>

You can contact me by email at dduck821@windstream.net with your latest best fishing story or any hints you would like to pass along.  I would also love to get photos of your biggest catches.  Together we’ll fish Lake Martin bringing in those big catches and telling even bigger stories!

Fall fishing on Lake Martin is in full swing!  All reports that I have received this past week have been that lots of fish are being caught.  Chad Miller fished a tournament this past weekend and reported that he caught one fish right after another all day long bringing in second place at the tournament.  He said the Bass were tearing the crank baits up!    The Duck boys have been on the Lake almost every day for the past week.  They have had great results from Spot tail minnows.  The best I can figure is that the only reason you wouldn’t catch fish this time of the year would be because you just aren’t going fishing on Lake Martin!

It’s been my experience that as the water temperatures decline in the fall, the Bass become super aggressive.  Look for them on shallower structure like a sloping point.  Fish fast!  This is the one time of the year that you can’t really fish too fast.  If you catch one in a particular area, work it real good because the Bass will school up in good feeding spots.    The urge to feed before winter makes them go wherever there is a lot of forage.  They are on the move!  You have to remember that they may not be in the same spot this week that they were last week.

There is still much conversation on the ramp issues on the Lake.  Damon Abernathy confirmed to me yesterday that they have completed the work on the west ramp at Kowaliga.  They have headed over to Pace’s Point this week, and when they finish there, they will return to Kowaliga to work on the other ramp.  So you can put in at two places on the Lake for sure.  There’s no denying that it is more difficult than normal, but it can be done.  And the fishermen that are willing to deal with the issues are catching lots of fish!  Just be careful!  There are islands out there now that you have never seen before, and lots of the brush piles that you have fished around for years are out of the water now!  It’s a learning experience to travel on the Lake now, but sure worth your time to check it out!

You can contact me by email at dduck821@windstream.net with your latest best fishing story or any hints you would like to pass along.  I would also love to get photos of your biggest catches.  Together we’ll fish Lake Martin bringing in those big catches and telling even bigger stories!

Don’t forget to check out the Fall Fever Striper Contest based out of the Kowaliga Live Bait and Tackle to be held during the month of November.  Registration is from now through October 31st.  Contact me at 334-857-3733 or email me for more info.

Please let me know if you have specific questions about areas of the Lake you want to know about or techniques you have questions about. You can contact me by email at dduck821@windstream.net or come on by the Bait Shop with your latest best fishing story, any hints you would like to pass along, or questions and comments you may have.  I would love to get photos of your biggest catches.  Together we’ll fish Lake Martin bringing in those big catches and telling even bigger stories!

Why get on Lake Martin when it’s at 475.1?  It looks like a different Lake.  You can see things you have never seen before and find honey holes that will be yours for years to come!  You are able to look at the structure you have been fishing around for years.  You will find places that you never even knew about.      We all know that structure holds fish, especially Bass and Crappie.  Finding a promising new structure or just getting a good look at one you have been fishing for years allows you to judge better how to fish it.  You can decide where you need to anchor your boat and how it would be best to cast into it.   Look for rock piles and line them up with landmarks that you can use when the water is back to full pool.  Once you have located these new areas, you won’t have to spend all your precious fishing time searching for the right spot!

Another reason for getting on the Lake now is that record numbers of fish are being caught.  The Shad are still moving into the creeks and the Bass are chasing them.   They are hitting just about anything you put in front of them.  I’ve had reports of large numbers being caught this week on Spot tail minnows, crank baits, jerk baits, spinner baits, and painted spoons.  Reed and Tom were out Saturday afternoon and caught 14 nice Spotted Bass on Spot tails.  Byron was by bragging (and rightly so!) that he had caught the limit in two hours on painted spoons.  Another fellow was by with a nice string of Crappie that he caught on Tuffies and still another had a great catch of Bass using Pink Worms.   Striper fishermen are out using Spoons, Shad, and some are trying baby Carp, what I call the Striper Special, with luck.  Now is the time!  The weather is wonderful, these cool nights are really bringing the water temperature down and the fish are moving.  You best just get on out        I have had major computer problems over the past three weeks.  If you have emailed a questions to me without a response, that is the reason.  My computer man was able to retrieve most of my files, but I lost all my emails and addresses.  So that is why you have not been receiving my weekly report if you were originally on my list.  Please send your email address if you would like to be on my weekly mailing.  And please email me again with any questions you may have sent my way.  My apologies!  I rely too heavily on what is in my computer.  I don’t write a lot down anymore, it’s all in the tower!  That can be a real problem when it crashes!
